and here is our friend working on his LS1 Camaro to show you an optional way of really getting into your work

I see people out there spending money on the car to improve it … If you spend half that effort just working on your driving skills, making you and the car work together as a team, then you’ll go faster – period. To make the car go a second faster on the track takes a lot more energy and money than making yourself drive it one second faster.

+1 To whoever said try taking the battery out of a new VW beetle...much less try doing any kind of maintenance to one of those piles of shit.

Since changing spark plugs got brought up also...I was talking to one of the service advisors at Reeves who was telling me that in order to change spark plugs on a Mercedes SLR Mclaren that the whole motor has to be unbolted and raised off the mounts in order to get the plugs out and back in. I don't remember how much he said it costs but it was outrageous. Then again, if you own one of those you probably can afford it.

I think glow plugs are more for the bigger diesels but I could be wrong.

glow plugs are only for old indirect injection Diesel engines, you have to turn on the ignition before you start the engine, a light appears on the speedo telling you that the plugs are pre-glowing.

thats crucial for starting Diesel engines at low enviroment temperatures....the octane numbers of the Diesel fuel is also important, there is winter Diesel that will ignite better at low temps.

The G-Class Mercedes vehicles of the Bundeswehr (Type WOLF) are very nitpicking with this, mostly they won't start before that light hasn't disappeared, but those are very old non turbo diesel engines (slow as fugg, some vehicles of the KSK special forces and Electronic Warfares have modern direct injecting engines)

modern direct injecting Diesel engines (of course coming from Germany ) don't need pre glowing times anymore, you can start them like any other car, they don't have glow plugs.

check Wiki for explanation why.

besides, Diesel engines are self igniting, so glow plugs aren't = spark plugs.

EDIT:

cool, English Wiki page also shows that "wait to start" sign on the speedo http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glowplug

Uhhh...no?

I helped my friend put a supercharger on his E36 318i and it was always in the trunk...lol

Maybe the 316s? But I doubt it

No, we had BMWs in our family all the time because my dad was a manager at BMW, my brother is a service technician at a big BMW / Alpina dealer and drives a 318 as a winter car.

battery in the front, we had several BMWs so I can tell.

The 323ti is the only Compact with the battery in the trunk, 316g and 316i + 318ti have it in the front, their trunk layout is different.

Well thats very weird and something I have to look in to. I HIGHLY doubt he moved the battery to the back, and even more so that the previous lady owner did anything of the sort. I was a tech at BMW for a little while too, and although we rarely had M42s and M44s come in, I dont ever remember anything but the big empty space there where that battery is. I always thought it was kinda funny, since thats where all the important stuff goes on RHD cars and such.

I cant imagine them putting it in the trunk for America and NOT Germany. Again, I'll look into it

EDIT: A random search shows a Bimmerforums tutorial saying that the 318ti is the only one with an engine bay mounted battery over here.

Ultimately, its still not as dumb as a battery hidden in the fender. Like a Vette. Seriously, put that shit in the back, like the foreign companies do. Dont tell me it'd cost too much either, because my red pill has the battery where it should be.
