"Sports car" for paved AND dirt roads?
If you want something that is sharper for on-road driving but still fairly capable in dirt/gravel I'd go with the Mistubishi Lancer EVO. If you want something with a little more capability on the dirt back roads, I'd get the Subaru Impreza STI. Most of the reviews I've read say the STI street car is a little closer to it's rally roots and has softer suspension with longer travel, while the EVO is a little harder and more precise on pavement.
Volvo 240 with massive head work, high compression pistons, side draft carbs, and suspension work.
Make the car rally feared for years for less than $4k.

I rest my case!

I say check out a new Ford SHO Taurus. 365 HP twin turbo V6 and AWD. Plus it gets great fuel economy, handles as good as some sports cars, and is just ticks slower than a new EVO in the quarter. But it's more grown up than an EVO or STi and has plenty of creature comforts and techno gizmos the others don't. Comes in at $46K loaded with all the bells and whistles. Super comfortable with plenty of room for people and all your stuff.

^^ I wish the new STi came in sedans.
+1! I heard the 03-06 Evolutions have better stock tires as well (compared to 04-07 STi). I'm not exactly sure about the new Evo X/STi.
Have you looked into a Volvo S60R? It's pretty luxurious and comfortable, but it isn't as quick as the STi/Evolution.
If you're planning on getting rid of 02 C5 ZO6, please let me know. I might be interested depending on the condition/price.

The OP said, "So now I'm stumped. I don't even know if I should be looking at a car, truck, crossover, SUV, what. I drove a Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT-8 and LOVED it, but it's really much larger than what I need. I've also been thinking about an Evo or WRX, but I'm not sure if they're tough or comfortable enough. A Porsche Cayenne would probably be ideal, but new ones are out of my price range, and in any case I'm not sure I have the intestinal (or maybe pocketbook) fortitude to go flinging one around on gravel roads.
I'm totally open-minded. Car, truck, whatever"
He also put sports car in quotes. It doesn't seem like he's looking for a hardcore sports car. The term sports car is so generic anyway.
