Its a small Gas Turbine engine...centrifical compressor wheel.
Basically a small jet engine but it produces little or no thrust...all the usable energy is transferred to a gearbox with two or three drive pads where a generator or hydraulic pump can be used depending on application. Some have a bleed air outlet to provide air for airconditioning or pressurization.

I think they use those in the F-16 for start-up as well.

They do use an APU..correct but I don;t think they use a T62 like that one I think they have a larger APU. That particular APU is froma chinook helicopter.

Dammit tony I told you to stop recording my 5th gear spool!
Al that would be disgustingly fast but what kind of engine would be able to support an instantaneous blow of that volume of air?

Well I didnt say it had to take all 40 psi you could use as much or little pressure as needed. Thats the beauty of it...you would use a pressure regulating valve and apply the boost at whatever rate you desire to whatever level you desire. If you want an instant 15 lbs you got it. If you want it to gradually increase to 30 psi you could do that to. But we would be talking like a Bowtie block with all the strongest components...oringed...the whole nine. Big money and for a race only car. And even then it would not fit into any class. I am thinking in excess of 2000 hp. Really just dreaming...but if I won the lottery I would build it.

over 2000hp indeed! That stang with the monster T100 sideways in the front of it is pushing 2000hp and theyre fighting spool-up time! Could the same concept be applied in a lesser form to a moderate sized turbo say a TS04? That would rule!

The boost preassure isnt the main concern because the real thing is having the volume of air at that preassure at wide open throttle. ThatAPU will definatly have that volume of air so using a little gas turbine isnt that bad an idea. Id mount in the back of a pickup. Extra 120lbs for traction
BTW Bob used to work on Gas Turbines when he was in the service.
4 GE LM2500 each pair driving a reduction gear of 27:1 about 2 stories tall of transmission.
