Radar detectors? Are they worth it?
So I'm driving down Bryan Dairy RD heading towards 19. And was behind a couple cars and a truck. And get pulled out of like 5 of us doing the same speed. And now have a 241 dollar ticket. I'm not going to say I don't speed, I do but normally with the flow of traffic. I'm 33 now and kind of grown out of the street race seen. But my question is... Is it worth it to buy a radar detector? Or are they pretty much useless with laser guns being used more often today... Was thinking about picking up a Valentine One Radar detector before this even happened. But not sure if it's worth the 400 dollar price tag if they are useless against laser.

Yes they are pointless with laser because once they shoot it, it's already too late. I have a V1 and it picks up radar (X,K,KA) from over a mile away.. But, most cops nowadays shoot instant on KA so any radar detector wouldn't pick it up until it's too late, unless there are other cars in front of you being shot at by the radar.
They do work. Sometimes its too late but other times you are notified 2 miles away or it will go off well before a bridge and you wont see them but as you come over the bridge what do you know they are sitting on the other side. Works good picks up the KA band and everything. I'm more interested in the new device that blocks all radar and if you get a ticket they will pay it. They stand behind the product that much. I'm curious to try it out, find a cop willing to try it out and see if his radar is all screwed up from it or doesnt work.
My V1 is a wonderful detector, but that being said it's only effective if the officers are gunning active targets. I can't just go around speed by myself, and expect not to get popped, but on the interstates there is almost always active gunning ahead of me and my V1 always registers it. (FHP is still using Ka mostly)
I definately see a reduction in alert warning from laser because of the narrow beam associated with the targeting, so if you live in an area where the officers are using laser I don't think any detector is going to help you too much. Maybe invest in a jamming device.

Laser is going to be tough to avoid all together, but my radar has given me enough warning to at least reduce my fine. I got lasered recently. I still got a ticket, but it was nowhere near as bad as it would have been had my radar not gone off.
If you are really worried about laser, I would suggest the escort ZR3 or ZR4 shifters. They attach to any escort radar detector and they work really well. They sense the laser signal and it shoots out its own laser signals out the front and rear to confuse the laser gun. I had an escort radar and laser shifter built into my last car, and it saved me from many laser speed traps. I actually got to drive by the cops as they shook their gun thinking it was broken.

I can't help you on radar detectors, but just don't speed in that area if you drive it often. I used to work right off Bryan Dairy right after the 66st over pass and I saw cops there ALL the time. I'd always do 45 in the right lane and then merge over to the left lane to get into the left turn lane for 19, even if people were flying by me doing 60. I've seen too many people get pulled on that road.
That's one road that was designed for a 55mph speed limit, but the city decided to put a 45mph limit just to add revenue.

I normally don't travel down Bryan Dairy. But have a friend that recently moved around there. But I'm sure the 241 dollar ticket I got will remind me slow down through there. Think I may go with a Radar/Laser shifter combo for when I'm doing a little more spirited driving.
