I had a friend that had a stock '90 CRX HF. That thing would not accelerate after about 65mph. Like others said using 4th and 5th just changed the engine tone. I was afraid to drive it, not because of it being a small car, but because I was afraid I would be rear ended by it not being able to accelerate fast enough into traffic. The car was the definition of failure on the interstate. Depending on the wind direction it would actually slow the car down, and you'd have the keep it full throttle just to hold an interstate speed without slowing down. Which didn't help at all since there was no difference in performance between normal throttle and full throttle.

212K miles, 36MPG in my daily '85 Corolla. They don't make them like they used to, indeed.

uh, no. Nice body lines, not a great car by any means as delivered. Put some work into it, like a twin cam, change the seats to Si, bolt up Si suspension and brakes, put some wheels on it, then its competent with today's cars. But potential does not mean "good car".

My old 88 HF, on city, would get at least 45 MPG.

Would last me for 2 weeks when I was going to school,

I would like to see articles that have the same heading from the other carmakers tho...
