Default Auto sales fall to 1982 level... Big 3 getting billions...!?

For those that dont know, the "Big 3" (GM, Ford, Chrysler) took there pirvate jets to Washington, DC not too long ago asking for money or there companies will fail. To make a long story short; congressed asked the companies to find out how much they need, and what there reorganizing plans were going to be.

These companies are not lying, they are in major trouble, but there not alone, check these stats posted in the USA TODAY paper and other articles.

6 biggest auto dealers, percents compared from november 07 to november 08 that just passed.

Chrysler 85,260 V 47.1%
Nissan 46,605 V 42.2%
GM 153,404 V 41.3%
Toyota 130,307 V 33.9%
Honda 76,233 V 31.6%
Ford 122,723 V 30.5%
Total: 746,789

This is the first time these 6 companies fell under 750,000 cars sold in one month since january 1982....

Well its happening. Not 100% yet, but I think congress is going to grant the big three there money.

This is what the big 3 had to say.

Chrysler says it needs $7B, and wants it all now. Promises more alliances with other auto makers to save money.

GM says it needs $4B now, and up to $12B more next year. Will slash production, close or sell Saab and maybe Saturn.

Ford, on the other hand said they don't need anything now, in the best shape of the 3, say they need a $9B line of credit for 2009. They promise more green cars, and exectutive pay cuts.

Also the big 3 will make other changes that seem a little, well not true, but its what they said. They'll sell there private jets, The CEO's will work for a 1$ a year (Aparently Chryslers boss Bob Nardellie already does...) Cancel executive bonuses, freeze raises, and the heads of the big 3 pledge to remake their companies by slashing their work force, make smaller cars, less trucks, more gas friendly.

Lawmakers are wondering why they should help and give money to a falling and deeply troubled industry...

What you guys think, I wonder whats going to happen..

Please post opinions, with facts or something, not just "Ford sucks, they should not get a bail out...!"

Lets keep it mature, and on topic.

Thanks guys

Y'know.. There's already a thread about this. But anyway...

Disband the unions before the unions disband the companies.

period.

the unions are the root of the problem, and with the execs working for $1.00 each at least theyre making up for all those years of overpayment...

They unions have bit the hand that feeds them. When the money was flowing they deserved to get their share, but they kept demanding the same take home pay no matter how bad the big 3 were getting.
Now, the big 3 pay out more to retirees than they do their entire current work force. It's awful what the workers have done to these companies. The big 3 just couldn't compete with the lower wages of import car makers. This allowed import car makers to be more profitable per car sold.

Today the domestics make some competitive cars, some really good cars, but their costs per car are staggering! They just aren't recouping their overhead costs anymore.

Three things should happen. Reorganize the unions. Sorry boys, party is over! and two, demand lower import tarriffs into other countries. Japan can sell a car here in the states easily, but have GM try to sell a car on Japan and they have to pay HUGE taxes. And three, market agressivley. The big 3 have done a terribel job showing the world that their cars are indusrty leaders. The rumor mill and BS about their "lack of quality" needs to stop.

I think the big 3 deserve the help, sure they could have done some things better, but w/out GM alone, 3 million people are out of a job. If anyone of the big 3 goes down, all the companies that support them (parts suppliers, etc) will fail too. If they fail then even the Japanses makes won't have suppliers, and that can cause the Japanese car makers to go under as well.

Its a big drain....and we need to plug it now.

They are asking for loans. And Ford has said they arent going to touch the money unless they have too and are expected to pay it back in a few years. It was in the paper today in fact. They also didnt fly jets this time cause according to the article they had sold them all, and the executives are taking huge pay cuts
