Default GM Collapse could take down Toyota, Honda, etc

When the big tree falls, it crushes all the smaller trees in the forest under it. If you didn't think GM's possible collapse could effect your other favorite automakers, read this:
GM collapse could spell disaster for Ford, Toyota, Honda

Scary stuff.

I don't really agree with this article.

Yes the suppliers of the parts will have a lower demand but would it really cause them to go under? I would think that it would cause them to raise their prices on the parts due to the lower demand for them.

I see people out there spending money on the car to improve it … If you spend half that effort just working on your driving skills, making you and the car work together as a team, then you’ll go faster – period. To make the car go a second faster on the track takes a lot more energy and money than making yourself drive it one second faster.

then you don't understand the way modern business works. Everything is based on forecasts and credit. Big business's commonly operate mostly on credit and nearly 0 capital. It is a flaw that is proving to be a huge contributing factor to our economic undoings. So these suppliers are forecasting that 85% of their income comes from an automaker (which is easily true), and then suddenly don't get paid 85% of the income, a credit company is going to lower that company's credit limit. This means massive lay offs.

If one of the big three falls, it is going to be u-g-l-y around this country. Systematic collapse comes to mind

^That is controversial. Ford Mustang, Chevy Corvette and Camaro. Hell the Cobalt SS is a pretty cheap fast sporty looking car.

All if well taken care of will last 150K miles + with minimal maintenance.

I guess grocery getters and econoboxes sell better than SUVs and pickup trucks huh?

Im not denying that the failure of GM would be huge, but that article doesnt do much to back up its assertions. It basically sounds like the global automotive industry will collapse because the Automotive News and one analyst from one economic forecasting company say so. It says nothing about how reliant any of the automakers are on U.S. supply companies and likewise about how reliant the suppliers are upon GM vs. other companies.

There would be a shockwave if GM went under, but to say that the entire global industry would go down because of it? I'm not buying it based on two opinions and no facts. Sorry.
