ok quick question i was wondering if it were possible to just remove and replace the airbox with a cone filter without having to buy the whole intake? or would i have to buy the pipe and all? it would be cheaper and easier since i have the mass airflow sensor on there...stupid question?

i dont think it would work seeing as how you have a mass air sensor right next to the box. might look to nuespeed to see if the sell an adapter because it looks like your air box unbolts from the tube with the sensor on it so an adapter would allow you to add just the filter.

I am no VW expert but it looks like you could take the entire air box out and any silencers that may be in the fender. It looks like the problem you will have will be similar to the newer Mustangs and just about any other car for that matter. Your mass air flow sensor bolts to your air box. Therefore you just can not slip a cone filter over the end of the MAF and clamp it because it is square . You would have to make a adapter or buy one. Other than that it is pretty staright forward. The older style mass-air flow sensors on almost every type of car had a hose between the air box and the MAF sensor so you could take out the air box and clamp a cone filter right to the end of the round MAF ! Hope that helps.

Yes you can put a cone filter on then end of the MAF with a proper adapter and mount. The smaller hose at the front of the airbox will need a small filter of its own.

Although I personally dont recommend doing this. No gains have been proven by doing this as well as it sucks in all of the engine heat. Which will kill performance even more. Im still running my stock airbox with a K&N filter but with all of the internal baffles removed. I replaced the small intake pipe where it goes to the fender with 3 dryer duct. I had a cold air extension going down low but it didnt provide any gains (at least on a dyno).

Well you could go the ghetto route and check out Home Depot or Lowes. You probably want something like a reduction coupler. Its usually made of rubber and has a different size on each end. Im not sure if performance stores sell stuff like this individually or not. Could be worth checking on.

Do not go with Remus. Remus is really expensive and it comes with a resonator. If you want a quiet exhuast then get Remus but what I did on my Golf was I did 2/1/4 piping from the Cat all the way back removed the stock resonator and got a 3 DTM style Magnaflow muffler. And if you live in the Tampa area then Id go to Danos Auto Air and Muffler on Dale Mabry they did mine and that guy is cool as hell. And my exhaust sounds nice and is loud as hell.
