BMW’s Shape-Shifting Car

Just when you thought BMW has done everything, from fabulous cars with breathtaking designs to safety features that is guaranteed to keep both driver and passengers well-protected, there comes along GINA. Not a who but actually a what, this is BMW’s latest addition to their array of concept cars. It is called the GINA Light Visionary Model, which stands for “Geometry and functions In ‘N’ Adaptations” and was actually conceived six years ago. GINA is not your ordinary concept car. What makes it stand out from the rest of already unique and advanced concept cars? It’s this: GINA is a car that is shape-shifting.

Making use of polyurethane-coated Lycra, its translucent fabric skin is spread and stretched over its frame made with aluminum. The frame itself is manipulated by electric as well as hydraulic actuators. These are what make it possible to change its body shape. GINA has actually already been running and driving. Under its hood is a 4.4-liter V8 engine with six-speed automatic transmission. GINA also utilizes Z8 chassis. It has four panels, namely the two sides, front hood and the rear deck. One can access its engine and other parts via the slit located on the hood. Getting in and out won’t be a problem with its jack-knifing doors. And because of its translucent fabric skin, the taillights and even the headlights are able to still be seen. Its interior is just as awe-inspiring and surprising. Guess what swings into place? The gauges and the steering wheel, that’s what! And once the driver climbs in, the headrest rises. This definitely adds appeal in terms of comfort and convenience.

The concept behind GINA is to face up to conventionality and take creativity to the next level, not to mention research. With this kind of car, its concept definitely shone through.

I doubt anyone who can afford that car would be driving in the snow... nor would they park it anywhere it would be exposed to prolonged heat or any other non climate controlled element.
