- Dodge dealerships now taking orders for the 2009 Dodge Challenger
- Available 5.7-liter HEMI® with five-speed automatic transmission for under $30,000
For those of us that can't quite afford the $40K for the Dodge Challenger SRT8, Dodge is releasing two cheaper models the 2009 Dodge Challenger SE and R/T models.
The base Dodge Challenger SE starts at $21,995 and is powered by a 3.5L V6 that puts out 250 horsepower and 250 lb-ft. of torque. The engine is mated to a four-speed automatic transmission and achieves 18 mpg city and 25 mpg on the highway.
The Dodge Challenger R/T starts at $29,995 and is powered by a 5.7L HEMI V8 engine that puts out 370 horsepower and 398 lb-ft of torque when it is mated to the five-speed automatic transmission. When the R/T model is paired with the automatic transmission the engine features multi-displacement (MDS) technology to increase fuel economy by as much as 20 percent. A six-speed manual is available that adds $995 to the price of the R/T, but also bumps up the power to 375 horsepower and 404 lb-ft. of torque.
The top-spec Challenger the SRT8 starts at $39,995 and is powered by a 6.1L HEMI V8 that puts out 425 horsepower and 420 lb-ft. of torque.

you do know that is the base price for the v-6. Dodge would never sell a SRT-8 for that cheap or a R/T for that matter. I like it alot tho,to bad you have to wait another year for the 6-speed.

^ at least if a car weighed in at 4315 back in the day, it was a "real" 4315 lbs, that could take on a truck or a pack of school children without dinging so much as a headlight visor. the "2009" 4315 lbs, is comprised of mostly plastic, and other such bullshit, and the car will likely still find ways to fall apart at mere glances from a mailbox post.
prices are about on par for the return of the big body dodge cars like the magnum, charger, 300c, etc. 20k for a shitbox v6, closer to 30k for the base v8 and probably upwards of 40k for the srt model.
i actually like the challenger, but i'm a big fan of classic dodges and this is the first one that comes close to looking like the retro version, i think they did a great job with it, even if it is big and modern day bloated. i never expect much from the interiors of domestics so it doesn't disappoint because i don't have my hopes up in the first place.
barring quality and personal opinions of construction and such, it will be cool to see some mustang/camaro/challenger comparos in the magazines.

the 6 speed is probably a fancy getrag unit that will handle whatever you throw at it and is near bulletproof.
or they might use a different rear gearing with the 6 speed to work out the ratios/top speeds/acceleration, and the difference between the 2 trannies and rear gearing is $995?

its a hot outside looking car, but dodges interior were starting to come around then it all just took a nose dive in the past few years. I still cant see how these things way so much now, even looking underneath they dont seem that different, and I know all the extra electronics dont add that much weight
still 21k is a good price for wanting to own a car that looks cool, but drive around in a v6. thats always why the v6 mustangs did so well
