In my personal opinion, it doesn't really even help though and is fairly useless.
i think they only help if your motor isn't running right to begin with.
If you can maintain pretty close to that perfect air to fuel ratio, then you shouldn't have too much extra crap in the exhaust to worry about

ahahahahaha you guys are so full of it
having lived in a couple of states that require emissions standards I can unequivically tell you catalytic converters make a radical difference on what's coming out the exhaust I have seen the numbers differences in the testing stations
also having one RX-7 with cats and one without I can tell you it make a big differnece - granted they are rich as running mofos as cars go in general
