Best of all you can get one for under $300 new at XAT.
I just placed an order for the Megan Type II Black at XAT. I got to hear it on a stock turbo SR S14 and it was sort of mid-range in sound- it wasn't ridiculously loud and it wasn't stock. It sounded pretty good on the SR car. I'm running an NA KA so it will be louder, but I'm going to run the stock cat to quiet it down a bit so hopefully it comes out OK on the sound level.

The looks of the exhaust are perfect. Black coated all the way to the tips, which are left metallic. I'm going to paint them black to finish the effect. There has been some confusion about the size of the tips. I measured them with my cellphone (my personal ruler ) and it turns out they are 3", but that's the same size as the stock fake metal tips on the stock muffler. They look darn near stock as a result.

Unfortunately Megan is waiting on a container to come in so it will be a few weeks before it gets here. I'll post my impressions whenever it comes in.

I can live with it. It's funny- I was in a big hurry to buy this exhaust that quite honestly is probably going to be a sub-5hp gain for a car I hardly drive, yet when Casey (I think that was his name? I'm bad with names) ran out to my car as I was leaving and told me it would be three weeks it didn't bother me in the least. After thinking about it, I actually prefer it this way because now I have three weeks of anticipation and daydreaming about this 3whp mod.

Let me explain my personal theory on exhaust mods with the current annoying and irrational enforcement of the exhaust law.

To get a ticket, a cop has to notice your exhaust and decide that it is worth pulling you over for. For the most part, cops drive around with their windows up listening to their police radios and the AC blasting on full. Because of this I feel that as long as your exhaust is not ludicrously, almost comically loud, but falls in what most people would think is a normal volume and noise range, cops are not going to notice you driving down the road normally because of noise. They will, however, notice a big shiny single exhaust outlet that looks out of place and pull you over for it. Of course, if you drive stupid and draw attention that way, they'll look for anything at all to pull you over and an exhaust that looks even slightly aftermarket is the first excuse they'll go for to pull you over.

I have real world observations to back this up. I had a turbo DSM with an electric cutout on the downpipe and a stock catback. It looked stock but it was very loud. I almost never had any problems, and when I did it was because I had been driving stupid and had caught their attention. That was when I noticed them on my tail and closed the cutout to shake them, which I always greatly enjoyed.

My friend had a turbo 240sx with some Japanese market aftermarket exhaust designed to be extremely quiet. It was 3" but it must've had five different resonators and pre-mufflers and whatnot. The muffler was an effective stock-like oval muffler. The problem was that the exit was a huge single tip, probably 4.5 inches and very shiny. With this exhaust installed the car was very, very quiet. The quietest modded car I had ever heard. So quiet you could hear the throttle open and close and the air whoosh into the intake even standing behind the car. He was pulled over for this shiny but astoundingly quiet exhaust on a regular basis and received several tickets for it.

That's why I worry more about looks and less about sound. If we had some fair system for testing exhaust noise and a specific limit on allowable decibel levels, I would go about things differently and go for the best flowing, quietest muffler without worrying about appearance. Instead, we have this highly subjective and illogical system, so we have to do our best to work within it.

I had straight 3" all the way to the back with a Megan muffler that stuck out and was ugly as fuck...

Some of you ricers or those without taste may think it looks cool, but I cant stand aftermarket exhausts on these cars. Imagine how much the police tolerate! I never had a problem at all, one mentioned it once, but I was tired of it anyways, so I cut it off at the DP.

My current plans are to just throw a muffler on the DP and call it a day. Cheaper, lighter, better looking, easier to install, easier to work with transmission etc. stuff..I dont know why more people/cars dont just end it early.....

More people do. They're called domestic guys. Most of them go through a phase where they run these so-called "dumps" with mufflers before the rear axle. They're like "hey, it saves a bunch of money and effort trying to get these pipes through the rear axle area and I still have mufflers, so how loud can it be?"

There's two types of reactions to this: one type either get sick of it six months later and routes it all the way back; the other type ends up driving the car with a cam so big the car won't idle, ET Streets and skinnies on the car all the time, and a TH400 with a 4.56 out back so that they cruise at 55 MPH on the interstate at 4000 RPM.

Damn, thats not cool. I was thinking that if I got the longest muffler Magnaflow makes, (something like 2' for the case) it should be better than when I had straight pipes and a cheaper muffler..

I'll reconsider though. Thanks for the heads up.
