Default Safety regarding removable steering wheels aka "quick release"

Ok so I'd like to hear your opinions on the safety of daily driving a car equipped with a removable steering wheel. My main concern is smashing my face into one of these. In weighing the pros and cons, I think I'd much rather lose 15-20k in having my car stolen than risk possibly dying because I didn't have an airbag and my head was crushed like a melon smashing into my Momo wheel. Keep in mind the 96-00 Civic Hatchback is not the safest vehicle so I'd like to retain as many safety features as possible. I've already been rearended from a stop at ~45mph by a 96 Bonneville which totaled my last hatch...something I do not want to experience without airbags.

Discuss.

I got in an accident once in my old beater, airbags deployed, they never even touched me. I think airbags are only for really high impact accidents into a brick wall or for people who can't help sitting up really close with their faces two inches from their steering wheels.

I think if you sit back far enough you should generally be OK. Seatbelt is what grabbed me back, and the fact I knew I was going to hit the guy. (braced myself while yelling "Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck!")

BTW i was in a 30-40ishmph accident.

LOGIC? You seriously want to invoke logic in a conversation about fake hijackings, missiles hitting the pentagon, and bombs planted throughout the world trade center? I thought it was a given that logic was checked at the door when entering one of these threads.

Get a battery cutoff (the type where you can pull the connecting peice out), mount it somewhere super secret, and pull the peice out when you get out of the car. That way no matter what they do, they won't be able to start your car.

Driving around every day with a removable steering wheel and sacraficing your airbag is beyond foolish.

But its a honda, a removable steering wheel is required to be cool.

Get a good alarm and some cut-off so no one can start the car except you. Then find an oem wheel that looks decent and has an airbag.

Anyone can steal your car if they really wanted to.

You're never safe.

If your seat is in the layback position because you want to be stylin' and profilin', you'll probably not hit the air bag. If you are in the upright and locked position the way the automotive engineers intended, the air bag will find you. Seat belts stretch. The body flexes. Air bags are set to deploy at an impact of 15-20 MPH. If you are doing 40 MPH and you rear end a car doing 35, the impact is 5 MPH . If you are doing 40 and the car coming the other way crosses the center line doing 40, the combined impact will be 80 MPH, and without the air bag, you'll be seeing the dentist for dentures.

Some guys like to paint the air bags. Guess what will be hitting your face (and imbedding in your eyes) when that painted air bag deploys? Painting the air bag, even the passenger side dash cover, is dangerous to who ever is sitting in front of it.

Air bags, when used with a seat belt, can and do save lives and minimize injuries.

+1. In fact, just to prove a point I just stole his car right now. Look for the next "My Honda got stolen!" post.
