Higher Octane = Better MPG?
Yes, any car with adjustable timing CAN get more power by advancing the timing a bet more than stock and using higher octane fuel. This will not give better fuel economy however

in my caddy i used to run 87, it ran a lil rough, and mpg was alright.
i tried 93 on it(since the motor has 10: or 10:5.1 comp), and runs way smoother, and actually got better mpg out of it.
now all i run on it is 93.

Yea for real. You see all the little hatchies rollin' around, got their girl in the car in the middle of the day just Sweatin' their asses off lol. I hope they aint losin' too much points for her arriving to where their going looking like she just came out of a pool smellin' like she just ran a marathon. lolz!
timing has a big part in it also.
when switching my old street strip car from 93/114mix to just 114 i would have to move the timing 5 degrees..the car ran a ton better on the 114 though..
dont try and run 13-1 comp on 93 if u dont have a clue what your doing..
