i thought that stuff is meant to make the inside of the car more quiet. Instead of having just metal and then carpet, you would be able to hear the road more.

If it's stuck on there, leave it alone. If its loose and or rotting out, tear it out.

If you're a stickler for road noise control, a good solution for deadening would be removing that crap (if its loose and cheap), if its somewhat smooth and decent to work with, I'd reccommend putting in some sound deadening material LIKE Dynamat, but you can usually find some other stuff much cheaper and easier to work with. I really prefer and love to use RAMMAT. This stuff is just about as good as Dynamat extreme but its the price of Dynamat regular and is a buttload easier to work with and doesn't cut up your hands as much.

If you need to know where you can get some, i know of a great shop that sells it for an awesome price.

It's called jute material. And any interior trim shop sells it by the foot.

I would go with what P057 recommended, its a little pricey, but it has the best results.

well the reason im asking is my car had a windshield leak and the trunk leaked allowing water into the floor-board. I really dont want the floors of my car rotting out, and i really dont car about road noise either. so i figured it would be in my best interest to just yank this stuff out before it did allow the water to damage the floor.

On some cars, there is a tar-type material stuck to the floor in square sections. Sometimes it cracks and water gets on the metal through the cracks.

To remove it, put some crushed/broken up dry ice on it to harden it, and it comes off easier.

After cleaning where it was with mineral spirits/diesel fuel/fuel oil, I use cans of touchup paint to paint over where it was.-Bob

If you are talking about a fabric-scrap material, it definitely will absorb water and cause rust. Either dry it or remove it if it's damp/wet.
Be aware that it also works to slightly insulate from the heat.-Bob

Sound deadener, aka, jute, aka insulation.

I would replace it, you will be suprised at how un-insulated it will sound without it.
