Ok so I'm buying a car from a friend which he bought from another guy but never got the title in his name. He went to have the titled transfered to his name today and they said it will be 7-10 days. Now my intentions was to pick up the car tomorrow after work. So tomorrow I was going to go to the DMV and register the car and call my insurance company and insure the car. Now the question I have since we ran into this bump during the transaction period is....

Can I get the vehicle registered under my name with just a bill of sale until the title gets here and my friend signs it over or do I have to wait till the title gets here... he signs it over and then I can register and insure the car?

They told him 7-10 days and it will come through the mail.

Might be a dumb question but its been awhile since I bought a car and don't recall everything I need to get it done. Just need some sort of information to see if I can go ahead and pick up the car tomorrow or have to wait till the title comes in.

Had he paid the extra $7, he could of gotten a same-day title...it only takes 5 minutes (at least that's all it takes in hillsborough county).

To register the car, you will need a valid DL and proof of insurance, as well as a Bill of Sale and title (or the attached form).

yah what they said is 7~10 days ..i waited over 2 weeks to get mine.and actually he can get the title the same day as long as he wants to pay a bit more money.and u need to get the insurance proof ready before u go to dmv..
and i think u need to wait for him to get the title before u can do any transfer or u might need to bring him along with u to dmv...call them to check out..

actually about this you can get a bill of sale to register it because my mom/cousin did the same thing so he could put our car that he was borrowing on his insurance. so my mom got a bill of sale saying he bought it for 25cent and got it noterized. and they accepted it, this was in st pete.

 

Charles is completely right. If he hasn't submitted the title transfer application yet (I believe he has already though), he can get what they call 'Fast Title', this is of course is pending on that there are no liens and or other complications on the title. If there are no liens and so fourth, you can pay the $7 extra and they will transfer the title into his name right there and then. All you would have to do is have him sign it over to you.

You do not need a Bill of Sale to purchase a car, the only time that's needed is when you have an 'open title'. What that means is the simple fact that the previous owner of the vehicle signed the title without filling in other related information, ie who he sold it to, how much, date, etc. It is illegal to posses an open title and if you went to the DMV and or tag office, they will NOT honor an open title without a Bill of Sale.

You cannot register a vehicle with a simple Bill of Sale.
