I use a napa one and I can get it under my car with no problems.

so unless your car is completley slammed it should be good.

Use a 2 x 4 to get it up a 1.75" higher, then slip the floor jack under it, and pump away.
Aluminum jacks are great, but they require more force pump than the heavy steel ones.

The cheaper steel jacks are starting to have thinner metal,
and smaller pedestal/pads to jack the car up with.

My aluminum jack will do slammed cars, frame metal is thick/strong, and has a pad large enough that I don't have to be concerned with the car falling off.

Stock scissors jack: good for a one time use in an emergency.-Bob
