Crimp and solder new ground wires from the chasis to the spark source. You need more juice than the plugs are getting so they cant fire as fast as they need to.

So, it only sputters until 6k? Isn't that around the VVTi activation? I wonder if that has any significance.

Like people said above, check/replace plugs, wires, maybe the distributor/coil pack/whatever, crank angle sensor, fuel filter, fuel injectors, mass air flow meter or manifold pressure sensor, ecu, ecu codes, base timing, o2 sensor maybe, maybe something with the vvti as it seems to go away after vvti engages the aggressive settings, basically everything that could cause incorrect fuel or timing.

Describe the sputtering in more detail.

Because when TR's resident Toyota freak comes on and says how uncool a Toyota is...theres problems amiss!!

I cant say how bad they are since I havent driven one, but specs wise...its a Honda Celica....thats all..
