CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Eyewitness News uncovered new information about a police bust that sent nearly a dozen people to jail on charges they were planning illegal street races.
We found video on-line of street racing in Charlotte.
Police say they've monitored local street racing groups for months, and finally moved in Saturday night at the Stonecrest shopping center off Rea Road in South Charlotte.
Officers arrested ten drivers and seized 23 cars. An undercover officer we talked to Monday night said the drivers knew what they were risking.
"The way the law is written is anytime you're charged with prearranged speed competition, it is our responsibility to seize your car."
We also talked to former street racer Khanh Duong. He agrees with the officer and says when you're out there, it's worth the risk.
"It's the rush of it."
Police say these races were happening on streets across the city, mainly on Saturday nights. While they know they didn't catch every illegal racer, they're hoping this will scare many off local streets.
Seventeen cars were seized after the four-month sting operation known as "Enjoy the Show", which went down in the Stonecrest shopping center. Police said the operation was organized because every weekend, late at night, young drivers would meet in the parking lot and head out to burn rubber on Charlotte streets.
Racers who were not arrested but were present in the Stonecrest parking lot said they're being unfairly targeted by police. They said they were just hanging out in the shopping center and they go to the Rockingham Dragway and other such places to race.
"We were just chilling. We weren't doing nothing," one racer said.
