how is it?
i am sitting here reading all the threads and seeing that people are running 11.5:1 and 12.5:1 compression ratios on 93oct how is this possable when all my life i have been told that u really shouldnt run more than 10.5:1 but that is on a muscle car is there a big differance form the comp ratings on a japaneese engine and a muscle car motor thanx jus wondering
There is not. 12.5:1 is not safe for pump gas unless your timing is retarded like an inbred redneck child. Anything over 11.5:1 and I wouldn't think pump gas would be safe, but you can definatly get deep into the 11.x:1 ratios on 93 octane.

If prepared and tuned properly, you can run some pretty high compression on pump gas. I've personally built/tuned a 2.0 that had measured compression of 12.9:1. It was ran hard for 20k miles with regular service until 2004 when I closed my shop. Can't remember the numbers but it made something like 265hp @ 8300rpm. It was tuned using Hondata, a/f was like 12:1 under WOT. Can't remember the timing numbers, but I wanna say at 0 vac it was somewhere along 12-15 deg.
ya Ive heard of 12:1 running on 93 also way back in the temple of vtec glory days there was a lot of talk about this. Last I checked though that site is like completely gone, just a craphole now with no useful info.

i've ran 13-1 on pump gas and it ran fine with which the engine was a 327 and had a .690 lift cam.when running it on 114 race gas i adv the timing 5 degrees..it has alot to do with the cam u are running and the heads
aluminum heads will take a high pump gas compression vs a steel head.

We did a lot of prep work to make it run reliably. We had the piston edges deburred, so as to reduce hot spotting which can be a precursor to detonation. The same was done with the cylinder head. The pcv system was completely reworked so no oil vapor would be present in the intake charge. The fuel injectors were chosen for a wide spray pattern, which isn't so much of a concern with a boosted engine. Spark plugs were dropped to 2 ranges colder than stock. Little stuff like that that you can get away with on a boosted engine become really important building a n/a motor of that magnitude.
the DCR is more important to pump gas-ability than the SCR is..you could have 12.5:1 SCR but only be running like 9:1 DCR.

well for SCR, bikes would be a prime example...for instance a kawi ZX10, last i recall it was like 12.8:1 or just about. and they recommend 90+ octane rating but people who have run 89 in it have not had any issues with pinging or anything. i've never personally done it, and i dont know if it has a low octane fuel/timing map built in like i know some cars do, but bikes usually always have a high scr...my SV had 11.5:1 and i ran 87 in it all the time.
