Default Need good Bay Area shop to stretch tires

I'm looking for a good shop in Tampa or preferably around Brandon that will mount my 35 series. My local place down here south of Sarasota wants to charge $130 to just mount 2 [215/35/18]. I think that's bullshit, plus the shop owner has never heard of "stretched tires" so, i'm not going for that.

Actually only my rear tires are stretched and i bought the wheels from a guy in Jax. My specs are

F: 18x7.5
R: 18x8.5

It's a mild stretch in the rear, i'm putting 215/35's all around just like i have on there now. I just want to go to a reputable shop that KNOWs what they're doing and has heard of stretching tires before ... and hopefully will charge me the most $40~ a wheel to mount the tires.

Thanks

well, you would do better to ask in the drifting forum, but why do you want to strecth them on the toaster anyway?

I never understood the concept of stretching tires, but I would be more concerned with the finish of the wheels(depending on what they are). I hate it when I get tires mounted and my wheels come back gouged and scraped.

Stretch sidewalls basically gives a stiffer sidewall. That's pretty critical for good feed back feel.

With less slack there, your inputs would result in faster response.

Man, I only started doing this recently and I really like it. I haven't been able to do a real comparison (like two different width rims, same size and make/model tire) but the drifts seem to initiate and re-grip smoother. Is it something about the way the sidewall stretches out? Or a smaller contact patch?
yeah stretched sidewalls remove the little bit of lag thats caused by the flex.
basically, from a physics standpoint, it just makes it so the sidewall doesn't absorb any potential energy. Of course, the stiffer the sidewall is (either by stretching, or by having a lower profile tire), the less it will flex. When a tire flexes, it is storing energy. This energy is released when you lose traction (ie. when you initiate a drift). It will make the initiation quite sudden, and make the drift a little harder to control. If you reduce the amount of energy that can be stored in the sidewall of the tire, either by stretching or low profile tires, then going from grip to drift, and back will be a lot smoother.

Think about a diving board. If it's really long, then it sags a lot, and will shoot you high up in the air when it releases it's energy. If it was only a foot long, it wouldn't launch you at all, because you couldn't put any energy into it in the first place. In terms of tires, that "launch" will upset the car as it gets sideways. The sidewalls will snap straight, and cause the tire to lose traction suddenly and harshly. Like CrazyHawaiian said, it will be a lot smoother if you can elimate it.
i would just say get some low sidewall Azenis or something, as i can't imagine stretching being that safe, or lasting as long, and do you really need it?

or are you just going for the look?

The european VW crowd has been doing it for a little while. Putting 205's on 9" widened steelies just doesn't sound too good to me. I think they're just being cheap and not buying thick/stiff sidewall tires. What about grip? Don't you need a little sidewall flex to be able to hookup? If you only have 100hp I imagine not, but I think people on here are pushing a lil' more than that.

i think its alright for a track only drifter, as tires aren't cheap and if your sport is eating them, then cheaper is better, but for just rollin around town, i think just some good HP tires would do more than plenty

the tires on my rims are stretched..i absolutely HATE it..i want normal damn tires on my rims..the guy i traded with had them stretched i dont know who he took them to though..

only stretch your tires if your planning on it just being for looks..it will just make your car sit 1/4 of an inch lower..and it increases wheel gap if you dont have coilovers..
