Default 1986 Nissan 300z

Looking at buying a 86 300z.
Wanted to know from the car gods what I need to look for.
Anything that is a common prob with this year/car.

It is a 5speed. T-Tops.. NON turbo.

*Also wanted to know, if i do get this, later down the road how easy doing a turbo would be.

Thanks guys.

Those have really soft suspension... Well.... the rear sags like crazy when you drag race it....

=b

Yeah, I have never owned one, nor have I read a lot about them, so I can't make any useful comments.

Thanks for the tip on the suspension. When it really needs some new ones, i will be sure to get aftermarket.

What ever they want for it is probably too much. Mid 80's Zs were plauged with lots of issues if I remember correctly.

Why nissan, what's wrong with the datsun?

seriously though, check with z-fever and z doctor in tampa. They would deal with your car.

The turbo should be easy enough, either swap the motor to the stock turbo motor, or add a turbo to the existing motor. there shouldn't be much structural difference between the 2 motors.

Well since I got a shout here, ill give some advice. <3 Hater.......

Its a whore, and one slow car. If your looking for speed the z31 is gonna be kinda hard to get to impressive levels. Especially since your getting the n/a. How much do you have to spend? If your only looking to spend 1k, get ready to spend some more on maintanence, as its probably not in too great of shape.

The turbos dont have THAT great of an aftermarket either. Well, compared to the Z32 and Z33 I mean. Check www.amzperformace.com , they have a pretty good Z31 area. And I know the owner personally (Hes my sponsor, well, if I decide to actually mod my Z that is)

And Z docs and Z fever are horrible. Try going to Delegance. Those guys are amazing Z specialists, and won't fuck you over like Z Docs or Z Fever will... Z Fever told me that it was going to take 2.5 hours to do my shift bushings and shifter plate, because they had to use a lift and it was going to cost around 200 in labor. I ended up doing it myself in 30 minutes at my house, and didn't even need to jack it up. They are assholes.

And yes, I do know alot about Z's. Bitch.

wow, there is a lot of misinformation in this thread.

lets start easy. first wait for a turbo car to end up in the junkyard. $300 and you are a turbo car. bigger turbo, walbro, meth injection, MBC and you are at 230 to the wheels, easy. replace the freaking 20 year old springs and shocks and git rid of the squat. no big deal. plauged with problems? my 84 is one of the least problematic cars i have ever owned. granted if the car wasn`t taken car of there will be shit to fix. it`s only 20 years old. yes the n/a is hard to get power from. but turbo an na block and it`s crazy, and CHEAP TO MAKE POWER ON!!! the vg30e/t has to be the most under-rated engine nissan made, but read your history books and you`ll see they ruled GTP racing backing the day with this motor. i easily have less than 3.5k in hp mods. last dyno was 374 and 398 tq on a slipping clutch. now with the n/a block, meth injection and P&P heads, i`m well over 400hp. and ran a 12.27 @ 121 mph on 20psi.

also at the florida z assn auto x last year, i ran middle of the pack, out of 50-something cars, pulling better times then boosted z33s and z32s.

you want more info or help with the car bring it to Ellis AutoworkZ. we re the only one`s around to give the z31 the love it deserves. z docs=no performance and z fever, well they don`t even like to work on them,

and did i mention we will soon be the only place to get your z31 dyno tuned using the stock ecu? oh yeah....
