I hope the mods will allow this. I wanted to reply to you in another thread, but it was closed.

I've only heard the name Rube Goldberg from one person EVER, and he's a GTE retiree. I clicked on your profile and saw your occupation. I was wondering if the whole Rube Goldberg deal was a Verizon thing.

When I read that in your post, I thought..nobody on here would even know what he means!

That's funny that the other place you heard it was from a gte employee. By any chance was he craft ( worked in the field ) at any time in his career or admin/management. It might be more of a coincidence that the guys who work in craft tend to have a decent mechanical aptitude and have to deal with the cause and effect chain of events. given that, who more than rube goldberg had a grasp on this?

I identified with rube goldberg in highschool when a project for science came up with a minimum 10 steps to turn on a light switch. Fun stuff.

LOL @ 10 steps.

I've never actually asked about or heard him say what he did, but I know that it had to do with the field stuff. The guys he is still friends with all have jobs relating to placing or splicing or have retired from Verizon and are working for placing subs.

Doesn't a "Rube Goldberg" device refer to something created in a makeshift manner, similar to "ghetto engineered".......or words to that effect......-Bob

No, it refers to a complex series of events to accomplish a simple task. If you remember the game "mouse trap", all those little steps, to ultimately drop a cage. Ghetto engineering would be more of a "PJ" device.
