E30 M3 had a 4-cylinder.

2.3L, 195HP
So did the earlier M3s IIRC, but I didnt grow up in that era like I have the 80s Toyota era

It does, and it sounds incredible (the older 5.0 V8 M5s more than the V10 ones) but thats my problem with it

Got a good ride in a real M5 today (not the new weird one) and although it sounded spectacular, went like shit, and was incredibly practical with all the room and space, I was actually disapointed torque-wise...I love how torquey their Inline 6s are! My M3 ride almost felt that it had more low end torque...and believe me, after replacing a damn alternator on even "just" the 4.4 V8, Inline 6s are still much prefered because of space (one of the many reasons I nutswing on Inline 6s so much)
