Sounds like a vacuum release on mine, definately not expansion release.

if you dont believe me try it... fill a gas tank with gas, shake it up some, make sure it has a nice tight seal, and then leave it in the sun... come back and check it... you will see one of three things, the cap has shot off of it due to pressure, it is leaking gas out of the cap, or the can has swelled in size and looks as if it is about to burst... dont trust me, try it...
