Ive made a choice and decided to go with the SRT-4 for the money it seems the best choice... I agree that AWD etc.. is way sexy but I dont plan on entering a rally race or doin anything dumb in something im droppin alot of money into...lol thanks for all you replys ...
Eh....Srt-4....
If you plan to race/beat on this car, have heavy pockets.Yes,the motor is strong, the transmission is a weak point.Investment?..Definitely not, you'll loose your ass on this car,and NO it does NOT hold value. Is it fun?..Yea,doing 60mph burnouts always got my jollies off,but running 13's @ 105+ didnt.
...A used one is a dumb choice...Its dogged, and has probaly seen more sychronizers than a machine shop. They do have alot of potential, but with potential comes money...Unless you have somewhat of a hookup at any dealership, your warranty is voided, with as less as a air filter....Me personally, would I own one again?...no....Takes mistakes to learn from mistakes.
RIP-Teh Skittle.
...May another junkyard love you.

For $20k, you can go quite a few different routes as far as getting a car and making it fast. The srt4's biggest down fall is, it's FWD, I would really put a second thought into that. The good thing about it is it's cheap to mod.
At $20k though, you could make a 240 pretty nice and fast, get a used s2000, wrx, rx7, I would just try to consider all cars in the $20k price range and then test drive them, research them and then make your decision.

i do not own a srt but i have driven a few and did come close to buying one. i think they are great cars for the price power wise. handling isn't great but like someone else said the acr is a big improvement. the interior of the car is basically a neon but people don't buy the srt for luxury.
srt-4= great car with good potential
but you could always buy a used honda, dsm or whatever you like and put the remainder of the money in that car. that would be more of an investment i think.

Honestly, and there is no escaping this.
If you want fwd
If you want neon styling
If you want the "safer" feeling of going with a "newer" car that has the potential to hit decent numbers with a good driver.
then hit up the srt4
But the whole "CHEAP PERFORMANCE" thing has been wrung dry by srt-4 enthusiasts. This is far from cheap performance if you considered how cheap an older used car with a completely built engine would be.
With fwd you'll be experiencing hearty understeer depending on how hard you're pushing, so essentially you would own a decently fast straight line car.
I am personally sick of meeting idiotic srt-4 owners who happen to take on that "Fast and Furious" persona. Dodge shot advertising right at ignorant teenagers and it worked well, although some people here and there have gone on to build sick machines out of them.
I hope neither you nor anyone else has bought the srt-4 because it appears to be the "best deal/bang for the buck". Look at how easy it is to build a domestic V8, or if you really had a hard on for the turbo fwd thing then look at gst's or building a turbo teg. vr-4's are still pulling 13.5 runs with high mileage, awd and a VAST array of luxury options. sure not the most appealing couple of ideas but compared to a turbo neon, c'mon. there are old 300zx tt's and 240's that can be found for dirt and built to run 12's for near half of what the price tag of the srt-4 is. If you have some bias towards old cars then thats just fine with me, but don't go using bang for buck if thats really not the case.
Its amusing to see when people think an engine has died that it is gone forever, I too used to think this way. Really, we have the technology, we can rebuild it. Stronger, faster, better and still blowing ice cold ac in the warm florida heat.
