Why does the steering wheel lock?

People have always stolen cars. Prior to locking columns being invented there was a key switch on the dash with three wires going to the back of it out in the open

its not anti theft, its theft deterrent, a thief is always gonna figure a way to get a car if he wants it.

how is it antitheft?it is a small cyl of alm.not telling you to try it but if you turn the wheel hard WHile it is locked it will snap the tube right out even a girl can do it....the reason i no this is we had a shit 93 civic and we where fucking it up and the wheel was locked so i just grabed it and forced it took about 6secs the SNAP

Actually the rod that locks it is usually closer to 1/4" thick steel...I took one apart the other day

It's the result of Government regs, from the 60's/70's. Like far too many govt. reg's, it doesn't do what it was intended to do. (list available if taken into court).-Bob
