They are great cars! If you buy one, have it inspected *very* closely as they do have the nasty habit of tearing diff mounts and floor pans out. Less so in the Z3 coupe as they make less power than the M, but still a problem. Reinforcing the floor/mount costs big bucks and BMW still won't acknowledge the issue. Even with that, I think I'll still keep mine.

If you didn't know it, the Z3 coupe is actually more rare than the M coupe.

You do know the Z4 coupe will be out soon too.........

I don't know what kind of a person you are, but with me - I was dissapointed by the Z3's power and handling, and upgraded to an M model within 6 months. Lost quite a bit of $$ on that little "mistake," but don't regret it I suppose.

Go for an M and don't look back. If you're short on cash, the 99-00 are a better deal if you want to go F/I - The S54s are catching up, but very slowly.

I personally believe the 99-00 (S52 engine, 240hp stock) are a better driver's car, while the S54 is a better showoff/highway car. If you enjoy driving, test drive an earlier and a later model and then decide.

Good luck! And yes, they are hideous, but I love em. The Z4 M Coupe looks like a 240Z - BMW did a better job of forwarding the Nissan Z line.

PS: If you can wait until next year, when the new Ms come out, the price on both S52 and S54 coupes should drop like a rock. A lot of the current M Coupe guys are planning on moving up.

A little off topic..but you know that little analog clock in the center console by the shifter? Frikkin $250 some odd bucks to replace! Thats more expencive than an ///M rotor!

BMWs are rediculously expencive, just a 6sp tranny with nothing else is $6000! Now that I mention it, chances are its a Getrag though.

This is the biggest reason why I dont have a BMW for myself. The only company out there that has the balls to keep making an inline6ex anymore, great cars that I've come to appreciate, just expencive as all fuck.

If you go to the factory for a S6S (6 speed Getrag), you're nuts. 2k for a warranteed import that will fit a 3 series (add 1k more for custom stuff if you're running it on a Z frame), less than 1k for the US models for the 5's and 7s.

Yeah, the analog clock is crap anyways Ditching mine for .. ahem.. "other" gauges.

I agree, if you're going to Reeves for your parts, it's absurd the price you spend for everything. If you look online though, EAP (forget their website atm) has most repair related components for about the same price as the more expensive Japanese cars (350Zish parts prices). Mods are expensive only because of the simplicity of supply & demand - Not many people buy BMW in order to mod it.

I'm a college student w/ a fairly decent job and I don't feel pinched at all.. but I am also an experienced mechanic and do a lot of research on parts suppliers.

Edit: M Rotors - Reeves quoted me $180 *EACH*... w/ my BMWCCA discount... $140 for the rears... Got myself some Euro front floaters (better cooling properties) from a local who imports them for $220 shipped, and rears for $80 off EAP Still expensive, but no worse than a lot of other higher end Japanese cars. Reeves seems to markup about 25% on average.. 10% to makeup for the CCA discount and another 15% just for good measure.
