Default Alcohol/Drug laws vs. Street Racing Laws

Anyone else think the laws are wrong these days. With Alcohol and drug related incidents causing over 1000% more deaths a year then street racing related incidients why is it that the laws are harsher on street racing then alcohol/drug related incidents.

Please keep all posts in here to be knowledgable, read all the posts and post only valid pertnant information to this topic please. No flaming, Fast and Furious quotes or BS, we are not 12.

No question about it. Drinking and driving is a much bigger problem than street racing.

I went to the Buc game last Sunday and two drunk fans were leaving at the same time I was. 30 minutes later the same two assholes were at Winghouse starting shit. I'm pretty sure they didn't take the bus to get there.

It is true that the penalties are way out of proportion. The bottom line is talking about the evils of street racing, along with the drugs, alcohol and guns that are involved is a good way for politicians to keep their name in front of their constituents and garner votes. Also, those same constituents and lawmakers do not engage in any form of spirited driving on the street but they do drink and occasionally drive after they've been drinking. They are not about to cut off their nose. Personally, I have been rear ended 12 times and t-boned once by drunks in my driving career. So far, my only racing mishap has been a guy in the staging lanes at Sunshine opened his door into the side of my car and chipped the paint.

Keep in mind that racing on the street IS illegal and dangerous and it should carry penalties. They should, however, be more in line with the offense. Racing throug traffic, school zones and areas where someone can pull out unexpectedly should carry stiff penalties. Deserted roads with no intersections shold be another matter. Normal traffic laws and reasonable discretion of the LEO should rule.

The dangerous driving you're talking about is reckless driving. There's a difference between reckless driving and street racing, but now two people could race on a deserted street in BFE and get caught and wish they had been speeding through traffic at 40 over instead, because the reckless driving ticket carries a much lighter penalty. That is if the cop didn't give them a street racing ticket for it anyway, even though they weren't racing anybody- not an unlikely outcome these days .

There comes a point in time where the laws are so rediculous they actually turn good law abiding people into criminals and sometimes at a point push them past the point of no return.
