An interesting observation among the Tech Forums.

I do read most of them, so I know what goes on in them. Quite a number of Import fans, will always claim that there car handles better than domestics. That drag racing is for cars that can only go straight and not turn without understeering and losing control doing a turn at 15 mph on some skinnys tires mounted on Welds.
The whole intersting part of it is, the dominating topics are trouble shooting, and motor builds for more horsepower. This struck me when reading Honda/Acura Tech, and there was a thread about a custom brake setup using NSX calipers on an EF hatch. I thouroughly enjoyed reading it and all the comments and replies ppl had with their own brake setups from different cars they used on their Civics.
Note this observation is only aimed at the Tech forums, not the motorsports related forums.

i think for the most part, people know what there cars can and cant do (not all cases, just most). your average mustang guy knows, a mustang isnt the best car to set up for a road course, there heavy and need alot of extra stability help, hondas and w.e say road racing because they know they cant hook, nisanns want to drift because they are easily set up for it..
Most DSM people are drag racers primarily and many exclusively. There's little to no discussion of suspension outside one or two national forums where a few experts field questions from many people who know nothing at all, and an auto-x group that has the only detailed information on DSM suspension but that primarily focuses on the 2g cars. 1g cars aren't the greatest handling cars in the world. They're not bad, but they're far from great. 2gs are a lot better and a lot of people spend more time focusing on that aspect of modifying them. 1gs have almost no aftermarket support for suspension- you've got one shop that makes coilover sleeves that you can run with Koni Yellows (ground controls have problems in the 1G fitment) and you've got 2000 dollar JIC's from RRE. I think Tein may have come out with one fitment of one range of their coilovers entirely because some DSMer had a contact in the company and worked with them to get it developed. You've got one or two quality lowering spring sets from two different manufacturers (I've got the H&R's that only lower an inch or so to avoid messing with my suspension geometry) and then several that are crap and sag. You've got almost no choices in shocks- KYB GR-2 stock replacements like I'm running, KYB AGXs that are damped so horribly in the rear that they unsettle the back end, and Koni Yellows that are impossible to adjust in car in the rear and are inserts you have to adapt into your stock shocks up front. There are aftermarket front and rear sways, like the ST rear sway I'm running, and a few companies make front and rear stbs, including a triangulated stb that RRE makes for the front. You can weld the rear control arms to eliminate the rear active toe that creates understeer and causes the toe to go crazy on launch and take a bit of traction away- I've done this. There are no aftermarket adjustable suspension components of any kind, so lowering below an inch starts to screw the suspension geometry with no way to fix it. Since there's not much interest in 1G handing, there's just not much aftermarket support.
Well here's the way I feel.
I don't go to race courses, I don't drift, and hell i havent even been to a drag strip in 2 years..
I dive my cars for daily driving, and it's just as fun to mod your car and feel the power as it is to see how much faster your car can go by beating the hell out of it down the track 15 X.
as far as handling vs. raw power...
when are you really ever going to catch someoen at a stoplight and race to see who's car can outhandle whos?????
It has to do with a straight line in America!!!
