Default fuel pump estimate too high?

I have a buddy w/ a '97 GMC Yukon, and he has been quoted 500-700 dollars to replace the fuel pump. Now I know this part should cost somewhere around $100, so that sounds too expensive for the job... Can anyone help me determine a fair price for this job, so I know my friend isn't getting ripped off?

Thanks for your help everyone

If it's an intake fuel pump and anything like a mustang .. it's a 30 minute job which can be done with basic tools and a little know how.

gm lists the pump at 140 for gasoline

if he gets it done at the dealership, expect probably 70/hr labor rates, and the book time is probably right around 8 hours

dunno if the 97's are different but for 98's disconnect the fill line, and vent at the rear of the tank (hose clamps on the rubber hoses).
The retainer straps attach to the edge of the frame by the driver side doors, they needed some WD-40 for the bolts to turn, the straps also attach to the frame near the center of the vehicle.
At that point, the tank can come down enough to remove the hoses, and electrical connections.
After those are removed, through carefull rocking of the tank, you should be able to work it loose.

It'd take longer if it's an in-tank pump. I know mine was like, $30, and is outside, accessible with the car not even on ramps.

Still think I should buy a new car?

it should be one assembly as you stated...the sending level unit, fuel bucket, pump and everything on one arm...and i am almost positive its too tall to do it with the tank in the truck/that close
