Default How do i get 460v service for a TIG welder?

I want to get a TIG welder, but they are either 230v or 460v. the higher the voltage, the less amperage it requires. so, id like to run a 460v TIG, but how the hell do i get 460v service coming into my house?

is there something thats usually unused in the breaker box that i can install a breaker into and run a dedicated outlet, or is there something outside the house that needs to be completely reconfigured?

im hell bent on getting a TIG so i can start welding up intercooler pipes and exhausts and manifolds.

if anybody knows somebody that knows somebody who knows about househouse electrical, id like to find out what it would take.

thanks
chris

460v would have to be 3 phase, and that is VERY pricey to get, or use a phase converter, but i would just go with a 220v system.

just run 4 extension cords, and use electrical tape to splice them together.

im not sure if it NEEDS to be 3 phase or not. the welder specifically states that input power is either 230v or 460v single phase.

this is what im looking at
http://www.millerwelds.com/products/tig/econotig_ac_dc/

i emailed Miller to see if it can be converted to 230v, cuz that would be a dream come true if so.

the 230v you can plug into you dryer plug. i have never seen 440 single phase,(we have 440 3 phase at work)you would have an electricion wire a 440v directly up to you box, if you house could handle it.

yea... i figured it would take something significant to get 460v service to my residence. i know that a 230v is a regular clothes dryer outlet. the thing is, Miller sells Econotig's in 230 and 460. it didnt necessarily say that they the same unit and are just reconfigured internally for either service. im worried that if i buy a Tig for 460v, that i wont be able to convert it over to 230v. I emailed Miller themselves to find out if its possible to do this w/ the Econotig or if a 460v welder is going to be a 460v welder until the end of time.

but thanks for that info guys. i hope i can find out soon if they are switchable from 460v to 230v.
