column shifter question

I know of the problem of which you speak.
If you have the old school shifter control where you have to pull it back to change gears it sounds like the mechanism that allows you to change gears when you pull back on the lever is worn out.
Sometimes its as simple as needing a new roll pin which you can get at nearly any auto parts store. There is always the chance to could be one of the other parts (there are only several) are FUBAR.
The best thing to do is take it apart and look for what does not appear to be 'normal'.

Like you said I'll just pull it apart and see what I find, and I have a Year One catalog already on the way
. I was just hoping to find someone who had already done it.
Dont ya love the old cars? Its an adventure evertime something goes wrong!

I didn't see him attack any other kids on the bus.

I told her it's time to swap in a LS1 with a 6 speed, but of course that would be contingent on me selling my car, hmmmmmm.................

I'm liking these ideas
. It will happen
.
I checked out that site you sent me shockwave and your right, theres more information on there than you could think of, thanks again.
I talked to my dad last night and he going to bring his steering wheel puller over, and some tools and go through it w/ me. He helped me w/ the tumbler and reminded me of what a bitch that was (especially that fitted ring I forgot about). He has a 72 Monte Carlo himself and it gets me time to spend w/ dad
.
Quote of the morning has to be though when Bill goes in the garage and moves the shifter,.....comes inside, and tells me,
"Yep, it's broke"

I've seen a few broken ones in the past and can't really remember what we found when we pulled them apart. Most of the time we would just slam them into position...and not worry about trying to fix them until that idea no longer worked. It's probably not the best advice though
