I read somewhere about putting vegetable oil in cars as being OK and as oil is so expensive I thought I would try it but I've now got smoke coming out of my exhaust.
I've checked the dip stick and the oil is not over the full mark which the handbook says not to do.
Has this happened to anyone else who has tried it?

Doubt it's even real. The guy has 6 posts there, and that's probably after replying in that one post of his. Just a way to get sent around to other forums.
Motor oil is not that much...I've already pointed out that while gas prices have shot up over $2.00 for regular, the oil at Wal-mart is still $4.17 for a gallon of it. A little more than $4 for 3,000 miles is pretty cheap. Gas for that period in a 30mpg car is over $200.

Last time I used olive oil in my engine, I spun a muffler bearing.

I see people out there spending money on the car to improve it … If you spend half that effort just working on your driving skills, making you and the car work together as a team, then you’ll go faster – period. To make the car go a second faster on the track takes a lot more energy and money than making yourself drive it one second faster.
