those ports LOOK like they could be improved upon immensly over stock.

tall skinny ports, i guess they were shooting for max velocity (better fuel efficiency, less power) but thats the way its gotta be in these shitty days of mega-pollution standards

are the aftermarket heads more of a rounded/square style port?

(i know they squared yours up al, but off the shelf aftermarket heads? is that how there getting bigger numbers?{more rounded ports})

Yes...stock heads flow awesome. They look a lil funny but there has never been a better designed pushrod head ever. Consider the new C6 is still using the same LS6 heads...is making 400+ hp from the factory..the engine is now lighter...and more cubic inches..BUT GETS NEARLY 30MPG

Marko...there are currently no aftermarket LS1 heads available. AFR has some coming soon...but they copied GMs port design closely. The reason there are no companies doing them because it would be a major engineering undertaking to improve upon the stock LS6 head as it is.

A stock LS6 casting that is ported and gone through by some one like TEA will flow more that 95% of all aftermarket "race" heads out there. And they do this while maintaining better drivability and fuel economy. They are a VERY efficient head. TEA has some LS6 heads here that will flow 320 cfm at .500 lift...and continue flowing till the .650 lift range up to 345-348 cfm range.

In comparison....Limeys awesome ZR1 with the 415 ci LT5 32 valve whoopass motor makes roughly 600 rwhp. Which is incredible.
Futral Motorsports just did a 434 ci LS1 motor that made 604 rwhp. Granted it has 19 more cubes and is solid roller...but that 604 rwhp came at A MEASLY 6300 rpm. Thats insane TQ!
With the right intake (which is the LS1 achiles heal right now) that motor could easily go 640 rwhp or more. ALL MOTOR!!!

Bottom line...LS1 heads look funny...but they are cutting edge...and doing it with a basic reliable pushrod design that is cheap, reliable and very plentiful.

Nah...LS1/6 heads will be on every GM car and truck V8 for the next 5 years. The LS2 has ensured that. Corvette, GTO, Escalade, Silverado V8, Cadillac, SSR, and yes...even the new camaro that will be coming out again. Not to mention evey street rod is putting the LS1 in the engine bay.

The LS1 aftermarket will be strong for years to come...probably even better than the 5.0 has done.
