I'm embarassed that I actually like this car....
I made it out to the GM auto show in motion in Orlando today. I had a chance to drive all kinds of cars (Z06....droooool). I jumped in line for the Chevy Malibu Maxx since the line was short and since I was about to leave for the day.
Long story short, I thought I wanted to see what this soccer mom car could do. I was pleasently suprised!!! It has some nads. Cornered predictably, the auto tranny shifted firmly and with precision. The steering a bit vague, but the car went where I pointed it. The suspension was firm yet compliant and responded well in hard cornering without too much roll.
It was packed with features and seemed to have better than average GM fit and finish throughout the car too.
I actually like the exterior styling (kind of). Looks like a mini-Nomad.
My only problem is it appeals to soccer moms and could use a dose of the "SS" treatment. Get rid of the interior woodgrain too. Slap some bigger wheels and tires on there give it a burbly exhaust note and raid the Saturn Redline parts bin and GM might perk my interest enough to buy one.
This market desperatly needs a budget minded sport wagon entry.

I'm emerassed that I really like the Scion Xb. I'm actually thinking about getting one for a daily driver. I like it everyone else think they're ass ugly.

It felt like it had pretty good torque. the motor rev'd smoothly too. It felt very confident. I just wish they spent a bit more attention on the details. The fit and finish seem good, its just kind of utalitarian. It has all the charm of a toaster.
They need give it a bit more of a masculine appeal. Too much mom-mobile going on. It has the ability to be a great little driver car, it just needs the looks inside and out to match its performance.
I'm sure the car and driver set will dog on it though. Simply because its not wearing a Honda badge.
