All the cheap illegal kits that were sold for "off-road" use are now banned for sale. In other words re-based HID bulbs for use in Halogen headlight assemblies are now illegal.

There are still DOT compliant HID components (sylvania xen-arc and Hella sells em' too) but be prepared to pay ($300-$500 each)

IMHO I'm glad to see them go, they annoy the hell out of me.

^^^ what he said.

If they don't come with your car, and they are not the DOT legal sets...they are illegal. All the companies who produced aftermarket kits were ordered to stop production of them.

I think even the real deal $400 aftermarket HID kits are illegal now, not just the "look-a-like" bulbs.

So being able to see is illegal now? Way to go DOT. If people stuck to buying the 3200K to 4800K units for their projector lights, you guys wouldn't complain or even notice. When you shove blindingly bright 6000+K HIDs in craptastic housings that have no beam focus whatsoever, you get the blinding effect. I could personally go for some HID driving lights since I am still dealing with wonderous sealed beam technology.

No the real stuff is still legal but be prepared to pay the real price, the HIDs in crappy housing is what DOT is trying to stop. Case in point here is a legal HID kit mounted on a S13....

this was talked about a while ago on honda-tech. i read that even the real hid kids (the phillips, catz, and others) are now illigal to sell anymore. they are legal if you have them installed in your car (the real ones), but they can no longer be sold. try and find places online that still sell them.

just stick in some el cheapo silverstar bulbs. they look like HID, install in seconds, and at a price of less than $35, you can take the $600 or so that you saved and spend it on useful car parts.
