why the atmospheric BOV all the time?
I have a friend thats building a TT engine for an 1985 vehicle and one of the unique thing that he did (besides restore this rare vehicle) is have a bov that dumps into the exhaust, muffling the sound and making it more of the sleeper (more for a nissan w/ the SR swap than say a WRX) Can anyone tell me the difference between the two?

I think its his external wastegate that dumps into his exhaust. There is no way his BOV dumps to the exhaust, that would mean his piping for his BOV/intercooler is connected to the exhaust, which means all the pipes for the intercooler would get REALLY hot. Therefore his car would be slow as balls.
You have mistaken the external wastegate for the bov. The external wastegate is a lot like a bov, but it is for the exahsut side and not on the intake side of things. True if you have a external wg dumped into the atmosphere it is REALLY loud.

BOV's like the TurboXS type H - REC (or something like that) can be recirculated back into the intake before the turbo..... this is for MAF style vehicles so they dont go rich during the release..... It just makes it more of a "bypass valve" instead of a "blow off" valve...
My buddies mr2 has it, its nice for daily driving so ya dont have noise all the time

That would be his wastegate, not his BOV... if its his BOV then hes retarded
I prefer bypass valves over blowoff valves.... thats just a personal opinion though. A blow off valve does nothing for performance... I don't call running rich between shifts a performance upgrade

The way you should have worded it is.... There is no performance benefit of a Blow off valve over a bypass valve.. because they both work to keep the turbine spinning rightwise between shifts and during peroids where the throttle is stabbed constantly, aka in a corner trying to balance the car, drifting, so on..

BOV = no compression surge or very little
