The polishing project from hell.
sandblast it first, believe me, it helps alot! I'm feeling a ceramic coat to spruce up the interior of the engine here though

Tony,
If you leave it uncoated won't it just rust and corrode back to its current state? I would seriously think about jet hot coating it if I were you.

Hey Tony - did you shoot it first with Oven cleaner (yellow can)? Do that first then tackle with a wire brush or "rust stripping attachment" Looks like a wheel with holes in it. It'll polish right out much easier... 1/2 the time.

The part that is making this difficult is the baked on earth that has built up after years on the road and 130K miles.
Its like removing a ceramic coating.
Now I have most of the grime removed I will start soon on the actual polishing.
Actually 'polishing' may be a misnomer for what I have planned. I just want the surface to have a brushed metallic surface which is a lot easier to do than polish. Its not like anyone needs to see there reflection in it. Its just an under car exhaust pipe after all.
The stainless muffler is also getting a the same treatment since its also pretty visible and dingy.
