i'm a trucker. get your CDL permit, get a trucker to train you on the basics of vehicle operation and log books, then call up the DMV and find out how to get a testing appointment. i'm not sure on the details of the testing appointment since i went to roadmaster instead.
make sure you get at least 2 years driving experience out of whatever job is requiring you to get a CDL. with a clean safety record and 2 years experience, you can get a job just about anywhere.

roadmaster is up to $6000 for their 3 week course. it was $5100 when I went three years ago. but if you do wind up going with a big over the road company, steer clear of Werner. they may have the best driver training program in the industry, but they suck for keeping the wheels rolling. i've spent many 2 to 3 day layovers in shitty truckstops with werner.

You have to look at the level of cdl that you will be needing for you specific application. If you are only running a box truck then I am fairly sure that you only need a class c, as d is not a cdl statused license. If you want the other class cdl you have to take the driving course that will include the vehicle that can be operated and the written test as well. If you do not look for someone like roadmaster then possibly a private instructor that will train you and then is also able to administor the driving test to you. Either way you need to determine what you actually need here and from there make the arrangements based on a call first to the drivers license office to see the requirements and possibly a list of schools or places to take the test. I hope this helped a bit as I partially regurgitated what was already said and added some cop info. Sorry sense of habit.
