Going to college for auto tech
I am a junior in high school, and need to start deciding what to do with my life. I want to be an auto repair technician. I was wondering what would be the best route for this career. A tech school; or USF or another university? I want to be BMW certified, but have the technological know how for any car (imports, domestics, oldermodels, and new models, rare and modified cars). Right now I am into working on by dsm but honestly have little know how to do any more than a basic tuneup and oil, filter change. Any advice would be appriciated.
umm does your school have the options for like duel inroll?..cause at mine i was going to take auto body or auto repair or something for 2 clases and get credits for them at PTEC/SPC...ask your guidence couselor about anything like that, you still get your credits, it replaces your electives..so look into it, its a good program.

Owning a dsm you will learn more about it than you really would like to know. I have owned my car for 1 year and 8 months now and know a lot about it. When I bought my car I knew NOTHING about it at all(or any car). Now I know all of this useless information that I will probably never apply to anything else than fixing my car.
Sometimes I think the best mechanics are the ones that just have acquired knowledge from working on their own cars.
I wish the best of luck for you and make sure that’s what you want to spend you life doing. Do you want to spend your days finding out why the ABS light is on, a vacuum leak...sometimes-stupid stuff that you really don't want to deal with.
And if not, you’re young. I'm 21 and don't have much figured out about my life. All I know is that I don't want to be stuck working for the man.

I think his aspirations go farther than working in someone else's shop. I've got a friend that is going to HCC for auto body repair. He seems to want to buy wrecked cars and fix them to sell.
I think the experience of the classes would be good for any do-it-yourself mechanic if you can afford it. I've considered it because I hate the thought of spending extra money on a new car as opposed to used. But all my used cars generally need repaired ):

Marchman Vo-tech has a good program for auto tech and auto body, there are also many colleges nation-wide like Wyotech, www.wyotech.com and Nashville Auto Diesel College, if you are looking to spend som emoney on your schooling, i am considering going to wyotech next year for auto body/Chasis Fab/ and high performance motors.
