Porsche trivia question
Anyone know the reason why Porsche puts the ignition switch on the left side of the steering wheel on the dashboard?
just and bit of trivia I heard and was wondering if anyone else knows.

Supposedly its a leftover from the racing days back when all the drivers had to run to their cars at the start. That way they could start the car at the same time they were getting in.

Tony, I'm gonna guess overdrive ratio's (not even sure thats a technology). But considering VW's had them in the 50's, I'm guessing Porsche did as well. Here are some others that VW laid claim too, so Porsche may as well:
Electronic fuel injection
Transaxles (instead of transmissions)
fully independent suspensions
ball joint pivots (instead of kingpins
Those are some of my guesses.

4 wheel disks
Forged Aluminium Wheels (fuchs)
Magnesium Wheels (gas burners) Mahle
Turbos
External Wings
Chin spoilers
Splitters
Brake ducting
Overhead Cams
Titanium connecting rods
Titanium Valves
Sodium Valves
Nikasel Coating on Cylinders
Intercoolers
Aluminum brake calipers
drilled rotors
slotted rotors
5 speed
BTW - the key was on the left for fast start procedures - SPA, LeMans, and Targa LaFlorio all had running starts - drivers on foot - the key was on the left hand side so the driver could turn the key and stick the car in gear with his right hand. They finally abolished this after several drivers got killed on the first lap or so - seems they were not putting their seatbelt on until several laps into the race... Can you imagine - 150 mph and not secured? :o
