Flat Rock plant to get Mustang
Can't believe they are finally going to do this. Hopefully they don't F-UP the inital launch.
Flat Rock plant to get Mustang
DEARBORN -- Ford Motor Co. is expected to announce Monday that it will build the next-generation Mustang -- its storied pony car born in the mid-1960s -- at a Flat Rock factory jointly owned with Japanese partner Mazda Motor Co.
Ford has scheduled an announcement at the plant on Monday. Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm and Ford North American chief James Padilla are scheduled to attend.
Company and union sources confirmed Ford's plans to build the new Mustang at the Flat Rock plant, known as AutoAlliance International.
Ford spokesman Jim Bright said, "we are not in a position to comment on it right now."
The automaker builds the Mustang at an 85-year-old assembly plant at the Rouge manufacturing complex in Dearborn. The Mustang factory is being closed as part of a $2 billion makeover of the giant Rouge site that includes construction of a new pickup plant.
AutoAlliance International, which opened in 1987, builds the Mazda6 sedan but is operating well below capacity. The plant employs 1,900 hourly and salaried workers. Ford likely will have to add a production shift and workers when Mustang production begins.
Mike Wall of consulting firm IRN Inc., who tracks automakers' future car and truck programs, said AutoAlliance is expected to begin producing the new Mustang in the middle of next year.
"The Mustang is a perfect fit for Flat Rock," Wall said.
Ford has high hopes for the next-generation Mustang. The current version has remained fairly popular even though it's built on an outdated chassis.
Concept versions of the new Mustang coupe and convertible drew good reviews at the North American International Auto Show at Cobo Center in January.
