Somebody explain shift points vs. gearing to me......
Here's my question...Don't u wanna shift at the highest rpm possible?
The reason I ask cause I have been pondering my shift points and got to thinking what makes it different? We'll use my gearing and tranny variables for this excercise(Class in session
)
Final drive ratio: 4.56:1
Tranny ratio: 1st(3.37) 2nd(1.99) 3rd(1.34) 4th(1.00) 5th(.67)
I know to shift from 1-2 at 7k but alot of the other guys(n/a DOHC) may shift at 6800 on the 2-3 and 6600 on the 3-4. Correct me if I'm wrong but wouldn't a car in either 3rd or 4th gear at lets say 5500rpms would be going slower than a car in 3rd or 4th at 7K rpms? So if you would shift the car at a lower rpm, wouldn't that have a result in a lower mph? I know about the peak power and powerband that u want to be in when your racing. But it seems more ideal to have a car at a higher rpm at the traps for more mph? I'm cornfused.

I think we talked about this at the track one time. If you make the 3-4 shift a little earlier your trap speed will usually go up. The reasoning for that from what I was told is by shifting early you will keep the car in the powerband longer and give it time to accelerate. But there is a a point where you could shift way to early and not make it in the best part of the powerband before running through the traps.
Scott, your right about the shifting early into 4th to keep you in the powerband longer. But I'm confused when I know this.....Let's say if my peak power is from 5k to 6500 once I pass that I know the car will be going faster at 7k rpms. That's what I don't understand when people say shift earlier. I guess I'll experiment the next time I go. -Mark

ok i may end up way off base, but here it goes...
Remember, the trap speed is secondary, your main goal is to get there as quickly as possible, not as FAST as possible (I know it sounds stupid, but it's accurate)
Don't get me wrong, MPH= HP which will help you drive around people, but it's not the main measurement of a drag race.. your ET is..
you wan to go through the traps at the top end of your power band...
a higher (numerically) gearing will get you into your power band quicker, but you will also run out the other end of the power band much quicker as well.
If you short shift your earlier shift points I believe you are right that you will most likely be running slower going through the traps than if you ran each gear all the way out. You're motor will have to work much harder if you shift into the top gear below your power band and you will not be accelerating as fast because of this, but by short shifting you are going to need to extend the 4th gear longer than what you normally would. THis most likely being outside of your power band, again you're car will not be accelerating as fast since your HP levels are most likely falling off pretty quick...

short shifting 1st 3 gears = winding motor up higher through traps
extending shift points in 1st 3 gears = below RPM power band through traps
either one can produce either slower or faster mph through the traps depending on conditions, etc.
Shift at the highest point in the power band in which your car is still making power gear your car to keep it in the power band based on your motor's performance/trany combo. (via gears/tranny/tire size, etc)
i.e. i've got a c-4 (3spd)
4.56 gear 1st and 2nd I shift around 7800, go through the traps about 8k..
