Wheel Offset
I dont remember the exact back space for 17x8 wheels. I know the offset is typically between 24mm - 29mm depending on the style of wheel (machined lip or not, cobra-r, stock OEM or bullet etc,.. they are all slightly different). 17x8 Bullet wheels are typically 27 - 29mm offset. And IIRC,.. the back space is 5.5 or 5.72 BS.
17x9 wheel are typically 5.9" BS and 17x10.5 wheels would be 6.5" BS.
Most sets designed for a staggard wheel offset will have a 27mm offset for the rear and 24mm offset on the front for 17x9 and 17x10.5 combo sets.
99 - 04 cars are slightly wider and have wider fenders than the 94 - 98 cars. 17x8 wheels look more tucked in in the rear than they do on the 94 - 98 cars which is why most people move to at least 17x9 wheels or do the 17x9/17x10.5 staggard look.

Youre the man Hurst! Great info! Now here is my situation. I have an old car. The set of after market wheels I want is stating that I need a 40 offset for the front and 20 for the rear. The rear will work no problem as its 6" BS. The fronts is weird. One wheel supplier says 20 offset for front and the other says 40 for front. Why would that be? Id hate to order them and have to send them back. The issue is, I know I can fit a 94-04 factory Bullet front 17x8, but without knowing the backspacing, I dont know which offset to use. To make it more confusing, your info is 27-29 offset. this is getting more confusing than I ever thought it would be. Ive been told by wheel dist that Mustangs use a 20 offset all the way around, but when i went to order them, one place said the 20 R, 40 F and the other said 20R, 20F for the same damn wheels. Not sure what to do...guess I will have to measure my BS, convert to Offset then hope to get the right spacers.
Different wheels will have different offsets,.. even though the wheels may have the same back space.
For example,.. 17x9 bullet wheels with a machined lip come with 29mm or 24mm depending on the application. An S197 (05 - 11 cars) will use the 29mm offset. 94 - 04 cars will use the 24mm offset.
If this is a non Ford car or older Ford,.. perhaps try searching for a forum specifically dedicated to your car or 'style' of car. I am pretty good at knowing what wheels will work with different suspension and brake set ups on 79 - 93 fox cars and 99 - 04 SN95 cars and the 05 - 11 S197 cars. I have forgotten what works on the 65 - 70 cars. As I recall the 65 - 68 could share similar wheels,.. the 69 - 73 could use wider wheels in the back,.. but I really dont remember the back spaces. I remember on my 69 Shelby I had 15x8 wheels in the back with 4.5" BS. That I do remember.
Do some more research before you buy. If you can find someone with a specific wheel that you can try out to make sure it fits,.. then all the better.
Here is a link to a wheel cross reference data base that might help you out.

Hope that helps.
