Need Some Input On Motor Builders

I am looking at finally replacing my stock short block for a new one. Of course I am not talking about a production short block.
Anyone have any good feedback / stories on the various shops out there ?
Right now I am looking at D.S.S., Fox Lake, and a few others.
Any comments that you have heard or have on these or any others would be great.

I have heard two bad stories about D.S.S. but a lot more good stories about them. I have heard good things about Fox Lake too, I was going to use them for my old plans.

Can't you use some of your resources to find a retired 351 nascar motor? That coupled with a 200 shot and a good cam and your going low 9's if you can make it stick.
If not that just get a local machine shop to do the work, why pay for the big flashy name. I have a good contact down in ft. myers but he's damn slow so you can't be in a hurry. On the flipside his work is top notch and he woln't break your bank.

I have a friend who has a Keith Craft shortblock with no issues. I have heard some mixed emotions about DSS. You could also try Flow Tech Induction. I believe they make short blocks also. Ed Curtis at FTI knows his shit.

There are two local shops that I trust to do the work. One is the guy that did the motor in my friends daily driven 9 second Z28 (Pace Car Camaro) and there is a guy in Lakeland that builds motors for a lot of the top drag race teams.
I just like the idea of picking up the phone and saying give me this, this , and this and it arrives a week or so later. Hopefully I pick the right people to do the job because I have been contemplating this for many years.
I think DSS would be good to go with, their engines make me drool.

Keith Craft puts together a good motor. I had mine machined at the Nelsen bros., brought them the parts the first time and they took care of everything else. Price wasn't bad either. I'd honestly talk to Joe or Rob @ Fordspeed, they'd probably be able to shed a little more light on the subject for ya. I think Panhandle performance was pretty good too (if I'm not getting shops mixed up).

We are sticking a 331 stroker with brodix heads from WynneSpeed in a car right now at the shop. Havent run it yet, but it looks to be top notch work. Too bad they installed a cam when we didnt order one and didnt send us a balancer and flywheel. But other than that it seems like a good motor for $4k.
Mars_302, I would get ahold of WynneSpeed and see if the can ship you the balancer and flywheel that they used to balance the assembly. It's strange they didn't send it with the long block.
FordMan, the NASCAR take-out motor isn't a bad idea if you are going to use Yates heads. If not, you might be looking at changing pistons. Depends if they are going to be compatable with the heads you chose to go with. Why not just put it together yourself? Then you know everything was done right. Talk to Strokd85. We just went through his motor a month ago in his garage at home. Nothing to it.

It comes down to a time issue for me. I do not have enough time to do it all at once. Also I do not have the patience to start it and slowly put it together whenever I have some free time.
But most of all I want someone I can yell at if the thing blows apart for some reason.
