Check the timing with and without the spout.check compression.Check plug wires,Check computer ground.Check for vacuum leaks.Simplest things first.

Basically, you wire the dizzy correctly, but completely backwards.

A backfirwe through the carb is an indication of a vehicle which is firing before the valve is closing. Is is a consistent backfire? Or intermittent? If it is consistent, then I would say you have a valve stuck open. If it's intermittent, then I would say you have a sticky valve or a plug wire wrong or something. You sure you have the right firing order? There are TWO different ones for the 302 you know. And the firing order is determined by the camshaft.

EDIT* You may also have accidentally installed the timing chain a tooth off.
