Default Blown rings....questions, and new motor build ideas inside.

Well Anthony helped me diagnose that my rings are blown. 120ish valve psi and not holding for crap.

How long can I keep a motor going with blown rings? Its burning a lot of oil, but Im keeping it topped off. I rarely drive it, but it is our only car for the next week until the cobra gets here.

If I am going to rebuild the motor, Id like to keep it budget friendly, but have a fun motor. I am pretty sure I would like to do a 331. Not sure on the compression, as I would like to throw a small shot or boost on it down the road. Would 10:1 be sufficient for DD, but low enough for boost/spray?

I am going to try to budget this by spending money on the right things the first time. What should I reuse from my motor?

Any ideas please shoot them at me. This car is mainly going to be a weekend car, drag strip occasionally, with hopefully AC. It will be on a manual car.

Please help me out and shoot a few ways to keep this as budget friendly as possible, but done right. Machine shops and number are a plus.

Thanks guys!

Figure out what you wanna do with the power adders first, boost or spray. There is nothing budget about machine work, and there are tons of stroker kits out there, again what your HP goals are for the car, will be the determining factor and what quality parts you'll need to buy.

10.0:1 is deffinetly street friendly. Mine is 11.5:1 and I drive it everywhere just fine. Drives like a stock 5.0

125 shot at most will probably be all it sees. I would like to be at a decent 350-400 hp.

Id like to reuse what parts that I can, if possible.

if your going to do a stroker kit you need the whole rotating assembly
and youd want a cam with everything needed to install it (springs, pushrods, etc)

if all you want is 350ish just do a decent cam with some head work and a little shot

or just be a balla and do a 4v 5 oh swap......

Did you do a compression test and/or a leak-down test?

We did a compression test and it barley made it to 120 on the 4th crank and it was not holding at all.. I squirted some oil in and it built up to 170/180 confirming for sure the rings are toasted...

ok a little secret, i work at a machine shop and this will work if its salvageable. use bon-ami its a cleaner feed it to the motor little by little just a small bit and let it run it should get worse than better if it works. good luck.lol
