Default Replacing lower intake gasket

Who knows exactly what is involved in replacing the lower intake gasket for a fox-body EFI motor? Can't get the car to the transmission shop until Craig can fix the coolant leak due to a bad gasket, and he doesn't want to tear into the car until he can figure out if he needs to remove the distributor or not. Much help is appreciated...I need to fix it ASAP so I can sell the car to pay for my insane insurance rates. :o

it's been a while since i worked on a non-modular, but this is what i remember...on a 5.0EFI, it is possible to change the lower intake without removing the distributor, but it is a PITA that way. easiest way is to disconnect the fuel rails, drain the coolant, disconnect the upper radiator hose and bypass hose, heater pipes, and anything else in the way. remove the upper intake, remove the bolts and give a good yank on the lower. lots of rags to catch any coolant. clean gasket area on heads, replace gaskets, put a thick bead of silicone on the front and rear (do not use the thick cork or rubber gaskets included with the new set). set the intake down, torque it, and replace everything you took off. top off the radiator (do not forget this step ). crank it up, let it run for a bit, shut it off, top off the water, and you're good to go.

curiosity, what's wrong with the tranny??

So my parts list shoud include:

1 lower intake gasket (for the GT-40 or Cobra intake)
1 tube of silicone RTV - the black stuff should be sufficient, or do I need higher temp?

I may take you up on the offer for help. It is all depending on whether or not I can get my brother to do it before the end of the month. Thanks for all the tips and whatnot.

Scott (Fordman)...about the transmission guy that works wonders on AOD's. I believe he is the guy that Race Related uses as well, but for reasons better left alone I will not be taking my car there. Will the transmission place drop the tranny from my car, or do they expect the tranny to be taken to them? Thanks.

Hmmmm...I just thought of something. My motor currently has a GT-40 upper/lower, and Edelbrock heads. Am I going to need a special gasket, or will the stock ones work?
