Default To the 4.6 guys

Im getting ready to put a clutch in my car which is a 97. About 3 years ago I bought a PI engine off a former member(jim....fakesnake) who said the engine was from a 2003 mustang gt. When i put that engine in I took the clutch and flywheel off my 97 and bolted it up the the 03. When I was was looking online at clutches I noticed that there is a difference between the clutches from 86 to 01 from the mid 01s to the 04's. I know there is a difference with the flywheel, 6 and 8 bolt. I just wanted some other opinions from you guys. I know it is a PI engine because when i put the engine it had the PI heads and the belt is set up the same as a PI engine.

Right now im just thinking about buy one for a 97 since the one for my old engine went on fine. Please just speak your mind, thanks, John

mid 01+ mustang use as tremec 3650 transmission and an 11" flywheel/clutch setup.

Sounds as if you are still using your stock T45 with the 10.5" flywheel/clutch.

buy a clutch for a 97 mustang GT and all will be good

If you have an 8 bolt crank you have a 99 - 00 Windsor 4.6. If from a Mustang it will be a PI engine. Easiest way to tell from up top is to count the valve cover bolt holes. 13 bolt holes and you have a 99 - 00 windsor engine. If only 11 bolt holes on the valve covers you have either a 96 - 98 Romeo or mid 01 - 04 Romeo. Romeo engines have a 6 bolt crank.

As far as clutches go all 5.0 and 4.6 GT's used the same 10.5" clutch (86 - 01 GT's clutches have the same part number, both 5.0 and 4.6) except for the later 03/04 GT's which shared the Cobra's flywheel and used the larger 11" clutch. The NA Cobras used both the T45 and the 3650 so its not a problem using either flywheel or clutch in a 4.6 GT. A common upgrade to the early 4.6 GT's is using the larger Cobra flywheel and clutch combination. FIY,.. though. 11" Cobra clutches will cost $100 - $300 more, on top of comparable 10.5" GT clutches.

I've run both,.. GT's and Cobra's down the track and had good results with the clutches in both. Surprisingly,.. you dont really need a lot of clutch in there. A simple King Cobra holds well in the GT's and in most cases the Cobra as well. But if your aggressive with the 4v and coming out of the gate at 6000 and shifting at 7000,.. a Centerforce DF or Spec Stage 3 should work well.

And I still have them. PM'd you my number. They've been sitting on the shelf in my father inlaw's shop waiting for someone to need them. I'll hold them for who ever has $50 and needs them. First come first serve. Not like they are a high ticket item,.. so they'll probably be sitting there until your ready to use them. Good heads,.. came off a running GT.
